LPO, Chamber Orchestra Concert Featuring Cervantes, Shakespeare at TAMIU Sunday

A musical program inspired by the works of Cervantes and Shakespeare will be presented by the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra at Texas A&M International University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ (CFPA) Recital Hall on Sunday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The Concert, “Inspired by the Best: A Concert Based on the Works of Shakespeare and Cervantes,”  is part of the University’s month-long “Cervantes & Shakespeare Go Pop! Festival.”It is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of its Arts Engagement in American Communities. Admission is free of charge and open to all.

LPO maestro and TAMIU faculty member Brendan Townsend will lead the musicians in a program based on the works of the world’s most revered literary masters.

The program will include the Telemann’s “Don Quixote Suite”  and Leigh’s “The Impossible Dream” from Cervantes’ “Man of La Mancha;” Purcell’s Chaconne from “Fairy Queen” and Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” from Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and selections from Bernstein’s “West Side Story,”  inspired by “Romeo & Juliet.”

Townsend said the Program gives powerful testimony to the lasting legacy of both world authors.

“It’s clear that both authors’ powerful legacy has inspired, informed and given rise to great works of musical artistry.  Our program seeks to share some of that legacy and we hope that it will inspire others to delve into the original writings that encouraged these beautiful compositions,” Townsend said.

“The combination of the University students with the professional musicians of the Laredo Phil adds an additional level of inspiration to the concert.  As titled, ‘Inspired by the Best’ is truly a unique opportunity to bring the best musicians and the best compositions inspired by the authors all together,” he added.
