More students from Mexico will be able to earn a University degree at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) thanks to a scholarship program that supports their higher education goals.

On Friday, Consul General of México in Laredo Carolina Zarargoza Flores and TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reestablishing the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) Becas Program at TAMIU.

The MOU serves to reinstitute the Scholarship Program for the Fall 2018 semester at TAMIU, explained Rosanne Palacios, TAMIU vice president for Institutional Advancement.

Consul Zaragoza Flores, who was also joined by representatives of Program sponsor, Asociación de Agentes Aduanales de Nuevo Laredo (Association of Custom Brokers of Nuevo Laredo), presented a check to TAMIU totaling $13,000 from the Consulate and $10,000 from Asociación de Agentes Aduanales de Nuevo Laredo.

IME-Becas Scholarship Program has awarded a total of $118,690 in scholarship funds between the Consulate and TAMIU’s matching funds since the Program’s inception in 2013, Palacios said.

Dr. Arenaz said TAMIU is grateful to be able to count on the support of partners such as the Consulate General of México and the Asociación de Agentes Aduanales de Nuevo Laredo.

“We are proud to partner with the Consulate General of México and the Asociación de Agentes Aduanales de Nuevo Laredo,” he said, “A total of 46 students have been assisted with scholarships and 18 have graduated from TAMIU since this Program’s establishment and we thank our partners for empowering our students.”

Zaragoza Flores said the Consulate General of México in Laredo is delighted to partner with TAMIU.

“The IME-Becas Scholarship Program helps Mexican students residing abroad achieve their academic and professional goals,” she said, “As a joint effort, the Consulate General of México in Laredo and Texas A&M International University commit to expanding higher education opportunities in Laredo through this Program.”

Through the Program, the Government of México gives high priority to serve the Mexican population living abroad in the United States by providing educational resources. It recognizes the need for Mexicans working or studying in the United States to participate in educational programs that facilitate their development and ensure the continuity of their education, the Consulate said.
