There is still time for aspiring business owners to register for the Small Business Management Certificate Program (SBMCP) offered at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Small Business Development Center as part the program’s 10th Anniversary.

Registration is open throughout October for the four-month, 10-course certificate program, designed for aspiring small business owners and current business owners wanting to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills.

The SBMCP aims to provide critical, foundational knowledge for those interested in opening their own business or for those that currently have their own business, or are seeking to improve their business operations, said Michael González, TAMIU SBDC director.

Registration for the certificate program is $200 and may be completed online at sbdc.tamiu.edu. Continuing Education credits are available for an additional fee.

“This program is for anyone interested in starting their business, but also caters to those current business owners who need to sharpen their skills,” González said, “There are so many times where we have had current business owners attend these courses, update their skills and then take their local small businesses to new heights.”

Program participants learn the basics of opening and operating a small business in addition to small business tax strategies, Internet marketing, and how to write a business plan, González said.

In an effort to provide unparalleled value to the local business community through the SBMCP program, the TAMIU SBDC keeps its costs as accessible as possible, González explained.

“We want to ensure that cost is never the reason that someone is unable to attend the certification program,” he said.

Over the past five years, the TAMIU SBDC has assisted a total of 3,801 new clients and provided 16,447 counseling hours to new and existing businesses. Over the same time span, it has aided in the start or expansion of 492 small businesses, generating $53.4 million in capital investment in local small businesses.
