Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a workshop for small and medium sized businesses that wish to remain compliant with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety and health regulations.

The workshop, provided at no cost and open to business owners, will be Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in TAMIU’s Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center, room 101.

The Occupational Safety Consultation (OSHCON) program is a non-cost and confidential service available to private sector Texas employers through the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Worker’s Compensation, said Michael González, SBDC director.

TAMIU SBDC is partnering with OSHCON to help employers understand OSHA rules and identify and eliminate occupational hazards in their workplace and place of business, González said.

“Many times, small and medium-sized businesses can be focused on other priorities and not place such an importance on OSHA regulations,” González said, “As a result, they can end up receiving penalties for non-compliance. This is a no-cost, great way to find out what rules they have missed in order to know the steps they need to take to avoid penalties.”

Some of the topics covered during the workshop include OSHA and employer obligations, those who need to comply with OSHA standards as well as OSHA hot topics and compliance resources, González said.

Businesses participating in the workshop can also learn how to receive free evaluations for their businesses that will help them determine whether they are meeting with necessary OSHA regulations, González said.
