Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Arts and Sciences' Departments of Humanities and Social Sciences will present a special lecture on gender violence and human rights in Latin America as part of a panel delivery on the occasion of Women's History Month Tuesday, March 28 at 3 p.m. in the Academic Innovation Center (AIC) 126.

Dr. Rebecca Janzen, associate professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and author of the book, "Unlawful Violence: Mexican Law and Cultural Production" (Vanderbilt University Press), will present her lecture, titled, "Gender, Violence, and Human Rights in Latin America."

The lecture is free and open to the public. It has been organized by two TAMIU faculty members, Dr. Pamela Neumann, assistant professor, Department of Social Sciences, and Dr. Irma Cantú, associate professor, Department of Humanities. Dr. Janzen is a scholar of gender, disability and religious studies in Mexican literature and culture whose research focuses on excluded populations in México. Her book delves into human rights, law, and literature in México.

Following Dr. Janzen's presentation, Dr. Neumann and Dr. Cantú will provide additional remarks on the broader themes of gender, violence and human rights in Latin America, drawing on their own research on representations of women, femicide, law, and feminist activism in the region.

Dr. Neumann said the panel looks forward to discussing with Dr. Janzen about the protection of women's human rights.

“Cultural representations of women in literature and the media are one of the main ways that gender-based violence is normalized and reproduced," she said, "Challenging these dominant representations and demanding the legal recognition and substantive protection of women’s human rights is essential for reducing violence against women, not only in Mexico, but in many other societies as well. We look forward to dialoguing with Dr. Janzen about these crucial topics, particularly as we wrap up our commemoration of Women’s History Month.”
