The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has named Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) professor of English Dr. Robert W. Haynes as one of 12 faculty members and 11 agency service, extension, or research professionals within the A&M System named Regents Professors and Regents Fellows for 2021-2022.

The Awards were presented this May by the Board of Regents in College Station.

The A&M System Board of Regents established the Regents Professor Awards program in 1996 and the Regents Fellow Service Awards program in 1998 to recognize employees who have made extraordinary contributions to their university, or agency, as well as to the people of Texas.

Dr. Haynes has been a member of the TAMIU faculty for 31 years.  His courses have included medieval topics, including Chaucer and medieval drama, as well as courses focused on the Renaissance, particularly Shakespeare. His book The Major Plays of Horton Foote was published in 2010, and his edited volume Critical Insights: Horton Foote appeared in 2016.

He continues to publish articles on Foote and on Renaissance England. In 2016, he received the South Central Modern Language Association’s SCMLA Poetry Prize and, in 2019, the Sam Alley Teaching Excellence Award from Sigma Tau Delta.  Haynes was the founder in 1994 of TAMIU’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, its oldest honor society.

Writing as R. W. Haynes, he has published four poetry collections (Laredo Light, Let the Whales Escape, Heidegger Looks at the Moon, and The Deadly Shadow of the Wall ) in the past four years, and over 200 of his poems have appeared in journals in various countries around the world.  He also writes plays and fiction.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said Dr. Haynes’ selection is well-deserved.

“Dr. Haynes’ research acumen and scholarly contribution to his field and our students is substantial.  He continues to inspire both colleagues and students daily. We are glad to see his contributions here affirmed by the A&M System Board of Regents,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Haynes holds his Ph.D. in English from the University of Georgia. His Master of Arts in Literature was earned at the University of Dallas, while his Bachelor of Arts in Classics was attained at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.

Dr. Haynes shared his thoughts on his selection as a Regents Professor.

“Having arrived at Laredo State University in January of 1992, it has been a privilege to work for so long with so many excellent colleagues.  I am especially grateful to those who supported me for this Award, as well as to our students, who justify our endeavors.  I am particularly indebted to my wife Ruth Yolanda Hernández, formerly of Tepic, Nayarit, México, for her patience and wisdom, which have made my work possible,” Dr. Haynes noted.
