TAMIU Chorale Spring Concert
Inspires Audiences March 26
Enjoy an evening of sacred music at Texas A&M International University Wednesday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.
Admission is free of charge and open to the public.
Performing in the evening’s concert will be the TAMIU Chamber Singers, conducted by Dana Crabtree, music instructor.
“We think it a fitting time to sing a program of music celebrating faith and renewal since we have just celebrated Easter and we hope that this music will serve as an inspiration to our audience,” said Crabtree.
The evening’s short program will consist of pieces by Renaissance composers Tomas Luis de Victoria, Giuseppe Pitoni, and Orlando di Lasso, contemporary pieces by John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen and Jeffrey L. Ames, and African American spirituals arranged by Alice Parker, Robert Shaw, and Moses Hogan.
“The Renaissance selections ‘Cantate Domino,’ ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Jubilate Deo’ emphasize the horizontal movement of each phrase in order to declaim the Latin text with each of the lines sung independently of one another in the various voice parts, giving this music the polyphonic texture that we have come to associate with music of this period. ‘O Nata Lux,’ by contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen, makes use of this same declamatory style, but with more contemporary harmonies,” explained Crabtree.
“Pieces with texts in English from the various Psalms include John Rutter’s majestic and energetic ‘O Clap Your Hands’ and Jeffrey L. Ames’ upbeat gospel selection ‘Let Everything That Hath Breath.’ Rounding out the program are two spirituals: The Parker/Shaw soft-shoe style arrangement of ‘I Got Shoes’ and the late Moses Hogan’s moving arrangement of ‘Abide with Me.’ Though the majority of the program will be sung a capella, the choir will be accompanied by local pianist Rebeca Anderson for a few selections,” added Crabtree.
