Writers Series at TAMIU
Continues with René Saldaña Jr.
Texas A&M International University’s Voices in the Monte Writers Series continues with fiction writer Dr. René Saldaña Jr. Thursday, March 30. His Talk on Craft will be held at 11 a.m. in Bob Bullock Hall (BH), room 101, and he will present a public reading and book signing at 7:30 p.m. in BH 113.
This event is free and open to the public.
Booklist Magazine selected Dr. Saldaña’s first book, The Jumping Tree, as one of its Top Ten Youth First Novels. His second book, Finding Our Way, “contains powerfully written, provocative” short stories with “universal appeal and subtle, thoughtful themes,” according to School Library Journal.
Saldaña was born in McAllen and raised in Peñitas, Texas. He graduated with a B.A. from Bob Jones University and with an M.A. from Clemson University. He then taught writing in middle and high school in the Rio Grande Valley before earning a Ph.D. at Georgia State University. He now teaches English and writing at the University of Texas–Pan American and lives with his wife Tina and son Lukas in Edinburg.
The Series provides an opportunity for students and the public to visit with local, regional and national writers who share their personal vision of writing and finding their voice. The Series encourages interaction among people from the University, the city and the surrounding area with visiting writers. It is made possible by funding provided by TAMIU and a Title V Grant.
