Combined Bands Concert
Set at TAMIU May 2

Alexander High school students will have the opportunity to play with university musicians in their collaboration with the Texas A&M International University Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Saturday, May 2 at 3 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

“We did a combined concert with J. W. Nixon High School last year and this year, we are doing the same thing with Alexander High School. This is all part of our student outreach,” said Dr. Michael J. Stone, director of bands.

The Combined Bands Concert will open with the Alexander High School Wind Symphony. They are under the direction of Roger Duran, director of bands at Alexander High School.

Their program includes “The Melody Shop” by Karl King, “Variations on a Shaker Melody” by Aaron Copland and “Lincolnshire Posy” by Percy Grainger.

The TAMIU Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s program includes “Silverado” by Bruce Broughton and transcribed by Randol Bass and “Colors” by Bert Appermont.

“ ‘Colors’ is a trombone solo and our guest soloist is Staff Sergeant Carmen Russo, principal trombone of the U.S. Army Field Band,” Dr. Stone said.

He added that after the two bands perform, they will combine to make one very large ensemble to perform “Festive Overture, Op. 96” by Dmitri Shostakovich with Duran directing and “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed, directed by Stone.
