Annual Day of Enrichment for University Employees May 20
Texas A&M International University will celebrate its employees with its yearly Staff Enrichment Day on Friday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. While University offices will remain open, staff will be greatly reduced, as all full-time employees are encouraged to participate.
This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Rick Rigsby will reinforce his message of excellence and remind employees that during this time of profound change at TAMIU, making an impact continues to be important. Dr. Rigsby, president and CEO of Rick Rigsby Communications and Founder of Rick Rigsby Ministries, inspires audiences worldwide — from the remote jungles of Africa to church pulpits throughout the United States. The award-winning professor also holds a faculty appointment in the department of communication at Texas A&M University (TAMU).
To help maximize communication effectiveness, Merna Jacobsen, coordinator of organizational and staff development for the Division of Student Affairs at TAMU, will help put communication within TAMIU in perspective for employees. Jacobson has worked in the fields of training, consulting, facilitating, and mediating for 20 years. She consults and mediates for institution of higher education, businesses, government agencies, and civic and non-profit organizations.
Employees will also have a chance to attend afternoon workshops on various topics including: diversity, spreadsheet software, spring gardening tips, investing and team and awareness building.
TAMIU’s Richard Aguilar, programmer in the Office of Information Technology will lead the spreadsheet workshop. This workshop will give a beginner to intermediate overview of Microsoft Excel, including instruction on how to modify and format worksheets and perform calculations.
Mary Lou Borchers, TexaSaver Account Executive with CitiStreet, will hold an investing workshop aimed at helping the amateur become more comfortable about investing. The goal is to help employees understand the need to plan so they are able to become more knowledgeable investors and achieve a comfortable retirement. Borchers has been in the financial services industry for the last 17 years, working exclusively with public employees.
Richard Gentry, lifetime Laredoan and director of TAMIU’s Physical Plant, will host a session on spring gardening tips and give an introduction to flowers and plants native to South Texas, as well as provide handy spring gardening and lawn tips. Gentry worked at his family’s landscaping and garden center as a youngster through high school. His 15 years experience in the local nursery business gives him a unique perspective on Laredo’s sub-tropical zonal landscape.
Dr. Terence P. Hannigan, director of TAMIU Student Counseling Services, will host a two-part workshop to teach participants to embrace cultural difference. The interactive workshop will help participants to heighten their sensitivity to cultures and be non-judgmental as they examine how stereotypes are formed and barriers created. Dr. Hannigan’s interest in cross-cultural adjustment and communication developed from observations of his immigrant parents’ life in the U.S., his two years experience studying in Madrid, Spain and his two years of residence in Chile as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer. He has also published numerous articles on cross-cultural psychology and is a licensed psychologist in Texas.
Linda Hodge, assistant director for Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation, will hold a session that will focus on self-awareness. Hodge says that to nurture successful teams, we must understand and improve our behavior. She also works for Entertaining Training, which facilitates training in team-building, problem-solving and other management issues.
