TAMIU’s Communication Disorders Center
Offers Seminar, Speech Language Camp

Providers or parents of children with communications disorders and children with communications disorders will want to attend the Texas A&M International University Communications Disorders Center’s seminar “Social Thinking” for providers or “Speech-Language Camp” for children.
“Social Thinking” is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 116.

“Social Thinking is an evidence-based technique that targets social-cognitive deficits exhibited by persons with Asperger Syndrome, high functioning autism, PDD-NOS, non-verbal learning disabilities, hyperlexia and other similar disorders,” explained Melissa P. García, clinical assistant professor of communication disorders.

“Social Thinking is the understanding of reasons, purposes and results of engaging in social interactions. It provides a theory of mind framework with which to interpret social situations. The goal is for people with social-cognitive deficits to increase their social skills,” García continued.

Target audience includes speech language pathologists, special education teachers, teachers, school personnel, service providers and parents. There is no fee for this seminar.

Registration is currently underway for the TAMIU Communications Disorders Center Speech-Language Camp for children diagnosed with speech-language disorders.

“The purpose of the camp is to integrate intensive speech-language skills within a fun environment,” García said.

The camp will run from Monday, June 2 – Thursday, June 26, Monday through Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m.

Camps fees are $320 for the four weeks. Children who are unable to attend the four weeks may still participate for a rate of $20 per day.
