New TAMIU ILI Director Encourages
Study a new language and discover a new culture. This is the message Nico Wiersema, Texas A&M International University’s International Language Institute (ILI) director, gives to many.
Wiersema recently joined TAMIU as ILI director and plans to offer a wider variety of international language courses than previously provided. He’s also open to suggestions from the community as to what new languages people would like to learn.
“This is a small start; however, I want to offer as many languages as possible under the ILI,” Wiersema said, “I think that learning a new language not only makes you a more interesting person, but also opens new doors, allows you to learn about other cultures and helps you accept and tolerate differences with others more easily.”
Summer language course offerings include English as a Second Language (ESL), Business English, TOEFL Preparation, Beginning Spanish I, Beginning Spanish II, Beginning Japanese I and Beginning Mandarin I.
Fall course offerings include ESL Levels 1-6, TOEFL Preparation, English Pronunciation and Conversation, business English, Spanish I and II, Mandarin I, and Japanese I.
Taking a foreign language can also prepare students who would like to take advantage of TAMIU’s Study Abroad program and travel the world, Wiersema noted.
“One of the goals of the ILI is to take a look at where our students are traveling in our Study Abroad program and offer the languages spoken in those countries,” Wiersema said.
Prior to joining TAMIU, Wiersema was director of Foreign Languages at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in México City. At ITESM, he held various positions both as administrator and teacher. He has also served as language instructor at Interlingua Idiomas as well as the Universidad Intercontinental in México City.
Originally from Heerlen, The Netherlands, Wiersema holds an MA in translation studies from the University of Amsterdam. He is also a member of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).
Summer I, II and Fall registration is underway at TAMIU.
