The legislative team which helped to secure Texas A&M International University over $42 million in State funding will be honored at a special afternoon reception hosted by A&M International president J. Charles Jennett.
"These three individuals: Senator Judith Zaffirini, State Representative Henry Cuellar and State Representative Tracy King have done a marvelous job for this University, bringing us closer to completion and helping to make the long-cherished dream of a four-year University a reality. We think itıs appropriate that we take pause and thank them for their support," Dr. Jennett said.
Jennett will be joined by University faculty, staff, students and alumni for the event scheduled Monday, June 30 from 3-5 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.
Jennett said the leadership demonstrated by local legislators in the 75th Legislature has helped to assure that the University will grow and develop into the leading force in higher education for South Texas.
"Senator Zaffirini has been here from ground zero in the effort to bring a four-year University with an international role and scope to Laredo. State Representative Cuellar, who we are proud to number among our University alumni, has helped to secure a brighter future for present and future students. Representative King has assured that South Texas higher education remains a key legislative focus," Jennett explained.
A&M Internationalıs fourth president outlined what is planned for funding provided the University by the Legislature.
"The general revenue appropriation to A&M International for the next biennium is slightly over $42 million. This will enable us to continue with plans for campus completion, including completion of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. Also targeted are construction of a Student Center, Fine Arts Center, a Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade and the development of intramural fields," he explained.
Overall, the members of The Texas A&M University System received an 11 percent increase in general revenue appropriations over the last biennium.
"I think the Legislature is aware of our unique mission and encouraged by our efforts to identify and secure additional external funding to support Texas' newest four-year University. We will continue to work to aggressively seek additional funding possibilities to extend our resources and complete our campus as speedily as possible," he said.
Jennett noted the tremendous support provided by the community and all segments of the University community from students and alumni to faculty and staff.
"We are grateful for their complete support and cherish their involvement in helping to build this University. We will continue to work to earn their support and trust," he said.
