Deadline Monday for Free College
Readiness Program at TAMIU

High school seniors from the class of 2008 interested in a University experience should apply for Texas A&M International University’s College Readiness Program. The program is free and open to high school seniors only.

Late applications will be accepted through Monday, July 16 or until all the slots have been filled. There is no fee to apply.

“TAMIU will serve 75 Rising 12th Graders as part of the Summer Bridge Program. The Program’s goal is to help students attain college readiness by the end of the program with a commitment to complete postsecondary education,” Dr. Julio F. Madrigal, Special Programs director said.

The Program is open to students in Laredo Independent School District (LISD) and United ISD who passed the English language arts and math portions of the TAKS (based on the scores reported on or about May 15, 2007), but whose scores do not reach a scaled score indicating college readiness.

The Program will run from July 16 to Aug. 10. During the last week, the students will stay on campus at the University’s Residential Learning Community. Students will attend classes daily, Monday through Friday, in reading, writing and math and join in special events.

“All students will be invited to participate in a variety of activities on campus, including using the library, tutoring center, spending the last week of the program on campus and participating in the First Year Success and TRiO mentorship programs,” Dr. Madrigal stressed.

The Program will also provide professional development on accelerated mathematic instructional strategies for teachers from schools that send their students to the program as part of TAMIU’s AP Summer Institute.

“Parents will be asked to participate in a college admissions and financial aid seminar during the residential week with presentations in English and Spanish. The Summer Bridge participants will be introduced to online college admissions and financial aid, as well as, college information-admissions requirements, scholarships, programs, work study opportunities, etc.-that are available online,” added Madrigal.

During the participants’ senior year, the Program will provide free instruction and academic incentives during their senior year and tuition and fees in the summer immediately following their high school graduation.
