TAMIU Volleyball Sets
Home Matches This Weekend
The Texas A&M International University volleyball team will play its
first home matches of the season this weekend. TAMIU will play Schreiner
twice, on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. before facing Red
River Athletic Conference perennial power Houston Baptist on Saturday at 3
p.m.
All matches will be played at the Kinesiology and Convocation Building
on campus. There will be no admission charged all weekend, courtesy of
2005-06 Dustdevil Alliance members.
Houston Baptist is off to a 9-0 start this season, ranking eighth in this
week’s NAIA Top-25 poll. The Huskies hold a 7-0 advantage in the all-time
series with TAMIU but the Dustdevils did take the opening game in last season’s
match between the two teams in Laredo. TAMIU almost took game three of that
match as well, with HBU edging the Dustdevils for a 31-29 win.
Volleyball Notes
Senior Xochitl Garza has been named Red River Athletic Conference Player
of the Week for Sept. 5-11. She contributed 52 kills, nine digs and 14
blocks to lead TAMIU to a 5-0 match record, with four of those wins accomplished
in a three-game sweep. Garza earned first-team All-RRAC in her first
season as
a Dustdevil last year.
Women’s Soccer Notes
TAMIU is off to a 2-0-1 start, marking the squad’s best
record after three games in the four-year history of the program. TAMIU
started 0-3 in 2002, 1-2 in 2003 and 0-3 in 2004. The Dustdevils finished
4-15 last season and did not post their second win until the 13th game
of the season.
TAMIU will open Red River Athletic Conference play on
Saturday at Texas Wesleyan. TWU holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time
series with TAMIU. The Lady Rams are off to a 3-2 start this season, ranking
fourth in the latest NAIA Region VI Top-5 rankings.
Men’s Soccer Notes
TAMIU will open Red River Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Texas
Wesleyan. The Dustdevils hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series
with the Rams, including last season’s 6-1 win in Laredo.
TAMIU has compiled a 15-1 record in regular season conference games over
the past two seasons. The only loss during this span was a 5-2 road setback
to Northwood on Oct.
23, 2004
Senior Felipe Muñoz scored twice in a 3-2 win over Texas
Lutheran, already matching his goal total for all of last season. His two
goals last season were recorded in blowout wins over Huston-Tillotson and
Wiley College.
Cross Country Notes
Sophomore Eddie González had TAMIU’s top finish for the men
at last Saturday’s Texas A&M Invitational, with a 26:53 effort
in the 8K race. That was good for 33rd place overall and the fourth best
outing amongst the non-NCAA Division I competitors.
Senior Anetra Matthews had TAMIU’s top finish in the same meet on
the women’s side. She finished at 19:00 in the
5K race, good for 25th place overall and fourth place amongst the non-NCAA
