"The student email project first came on line this past Spring Semester in a pilot offer that attracted over 700 students. The project has now been expanded so that all currently registered students can receive and send email," said Lakshmana Viswanath, A&M International Director of Computer and Telecommunications Services.
"This has been a very successful program, with many of our faculty incorporating email and Internet accessibility into their course work with students. We are happy to be able to expand our initial limited service to all students at A&M International University," Viswanath said.
Viswanath said interested students need only visit C Building room 115 to pick up instructions on how they can obtain an email account with the University.
He noted the process has now been fully automated and works interactively off the University's Home Page. Students complete a request, provide their own disc and can download the files needed to initiate service.
Students who had active accounts last semester are asked to revisit C-115 to update their account. Accounts established last year that are not updated by Sept. 30 will be subject to cancellation.
Viswanath said the University's CTS offices will coordinate a series of workshops that provide insight into using email. A schedule is available in C- 115.
He said the email and Internet access that students at A&M International enjoy is usually only available at larger universities.
"This level of service is not available elsewhere locally and, on state- average, is only available at some of the larger and more well-established universities. Our fiber optic network, open-ended systems and mainframe access make this possible. We are happy to be able to provide our students with access to the many research and communications applications that are possible via email and Internet access," he explained.
