TAMIU’s Dr. Mitchell Named
2010-2011 Regents Professor

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Thomas R. Mitchell has been named a 2010-11 Regents Professor by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

Established by the Board in 1996, the Regents Professor Award program recognizes employees that hold a record of distinguished teaching combined with accomplishments of research or other scholarly activity, as well as who have made exemplary contributions to their university or agency and to the people of Texas.

Dr. Tom Mitchell, Texas A&M International University dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was named a 2010-11 Regents Professor by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents at its November meeting. Dr. Mitchell is president of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society and a nationally recognized scholar on Hawthorne.  He wrote Hawthorne’s Fuller Mystery (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1998). He earned his Ph.D. in English from Texas A&M University and his B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of Louisiana – Monroe in 1971 and 1973. 

Mitchell was a faculty member and department administrator at Laredo Community College from 1973 to 1998.  He has been on the faculty of Texas A&M International University since 1998.  He is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and was the charter president of the TAMIU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.  He is married to Dr. Linda Marie Garcia Mitchell, principal of St. Peter’s Memorial School. They have 3 children.

Approximately 144 A&M System faculty members have been recognized with the Regents Professor Award. Dr. Mitchell joins Dr. Jerry Thompson and Dr. Juan Lira as the third TAMIU faculty member to be named a Regents Professor.
