What the Maya Really Meant March 24 at TAMIU

Musicians have penned songs about it. Billions of websites are devoted to it. Movies have entertained viewers curious about it.

“It” is what the Maya supposedly predicted—the end of the world. Now you can see the show devoted to it. “2012: Ancient Skies, Ancient Mysteries” will have its Laredo premiere at the Texas A&M International University Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium Saturday, March 24.

Show times are at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m.

“Our audiences have been asking questions about the subject, what the Maya predicted, and we’re extremely excited to bring this show to our Planetarium to try to answer some of those questions,” said Gerardo A. Pérez, director, TAMIU LBV Planetarium.

The show is centered around legends and mysteries ancient cultures saw in the night sky. It explores the knowledge these people discovered and the importance of their connection with the stars, how they applied this knowledge to the construction of detailed structures around the earth, the creation of calendars (including the Mayan calendar) and the growth of Greek astronomical science.

“Audiences will see common threads to these observations across cultures and see how close the ancient Greeks came to our current astronomical understanding and ask whether or not the Maya actually predicted the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012,” Pérez added.

General admission for this premium show is $6 and $5 for children, seniors, TAMIU students, faculty and staff.
