Philharmonic Opens Year
with Concert Sunday
On Sunday January 26 at 3:00 p.m. the Laredo Phil takes the stage at Laredo Community College’s Martínez Fine Arts Center to open the second half of its “Shared Borders” season.
Tickets are available at the door and are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors. Students with a current ID card are admitted free. Tickets may also be reserved by calling 326.3042 or visiting www.laredophil.com.
Opening the concert will be the simple but effective “For a Beautiful Land” – a tribute to her native Iowa by American composer Linda Robbins Coleman. The instantly recognizable “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius follows. This work includes the tune used in the hymn “Be Still My Soul.”
“Imagenes” by Huizar, the Mexican work scheduled on the program, has been replaced with “Sinfonia No. 2 “ by the contemporary composer Federico Ibarra because of copyright restrictions.
The second half of the concert features German-born pianist Dr. Joachim Reinhuber.
Dr. Reinhuber wowed the Laredo concert audience with a stunning recital performance last September. He returns to reprise the role of soloist in Brahms’ “Piano concerto No. 1,” which he and LPO Maestro Brendan Townsend performed together in Kingsville some years ago.
Long-time Laredo Phil Board member Ardith Epstein said she is looking forward to the Sunday performance.
“We have already had three incredible concerts by the Laredo Phil this season,” Epstein said, “I can only imagine what a wonderful afternoon of music this will be.”
For the past few years, Maestro Townsend and the Laredo Phil have been working on developing new and innovative approaches to deepen the concert experience for Laredo audiences.
“Using ‘Shared Borders’ as a theme has allowed us to bring together the music of living, American and female composers and music by their south of the border contemporaries,” said Townsend.
The concert Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014 begins promptly at 3:00 p.m. at the Martinez Fine Arts Center of LCC’s Ft Macintosh Campus downtown.
