TAMIU Hosts National Nurses
Week Celebration Tuesday, May 6

The Texas A&M International University College of Nursing and Health Sciences will honor those in the first line of defense in the prevention of illness and injury during National Nurses Week with a reception Tuesday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Student Center Ballroom.

The Celebration honors National Nurses Week and all TAMIU nursing faculty and students.

“This event will embrace and acknowledge nurses in our community,” explained Anna Buentello, TAMIU Canseco School of Nursing staff assistant.

In 1998, The American Nurses Association (ANA) designated May 8 as National Student Nurses Day. This day, along with National School Nurse Day, is to be celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year.

“Nurses Day is a time to celebrate and honor all nurses who work tirelessly to make a difference in patient’s lives. It is a time to remember the legacy of the nurses who came before us and provided the foundation for professional nursing. Florence Nightingale is known as the mother of professional nursing. During the Crimean War, she provided care to the ill and dying by the light of a candle,” explained Dr. Glenda Walker, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing.

“Each year as thousands of nursing students graduate from nursing programs, we pass the legacy on to the next generation of nursing leaders. We celebrate the fact that we, the nurses of today, stand on the shoulders of all the nurses who came before us,” concluded Dr. Walker.

This year, Nightingale’s pioneering efforts in the Crimean War mark 160 years of nursing history. Since then, nurses and nursing programs around the world continuously work to improve the quality in patient care and community support.
