International Admissions

Requirements and Procedures

Apply for international admission if you will soon graduate from non-U.S. high school.

  1. Apply at www.applytexas.org
  2. Submit official high school transcript(s).
    • Must be certified by a school official, contain the school seal, and be delivered in a sealed envelope to the Office of Admissions.
  3. Submit score(s) for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL**).
    • Register at www.ets.org
    • A minimum score of 69 Internet-Based TOEFL is required.
  4. Submit ACT and/or SAT scores.
    • A minimum score of 900 SAT (Combined Critical Reading and Math scores).
    • A minimum score of 19 ACT Composite.
  5. Financial Documents - only for students requesting an I-20.
  6. International students transferring to TAMIU from another institution in the U.S. must submit:
    • Foreign Student Advisor’s Report form.
    • Copy of current I-20.
    • Copy of current Visa and I-94.
  7. Health Insurance.
    • International students are required to obtain a student health insurance plan approved by Texas A&M University System. For more information, click here.
  8. Register for classes.
    • Submit all sections of attempted placement exams (TSI).
    • Schedule appointment with Office of Recruitment & School Relations to register for classes.

*All Documents for F-1 Visa students must be received before letter of acceptance and I-20 can be issued.

**Please consult with Office of Admissions at 956.326.2200 for TOEFL exemptions guidelines.

***Must be dated within six months of first semester of enrollment.

Note: Applicants who've earned a high school diploma or are completing high school credits within two (2) semesters are considered freshmen applicants. Admissions score minimums are based according to class rank:

Transfer Requirements

Students transferring with less than 30 college credit hours must meet International Freshman Requirements. Please see the above requirements.

Student Health Insurance

Student Exchange

If you have an interest in attending TAMIU, first check with your home institution in regards to our partnership and application criteria. We cannot accept exchange students that have not been nominated by their home institution. If you are interested in participating in the exchange program, complete the following steps.

Application Deadlines
Fall - May 15
Spring - October 15

  • Nomination from Home Institution
  • Complete TAMIU Exchange Application
  • Official College Transcript
  • Proof of English Proficiency
    • English track majors: iBT TOEFL score of 61 or higher certified by home institution
    • Non English track majors: An official ETS TOEFL score of 61 iBT or higher*
    • TOEFL Exemptions
    • TAMIU’s ETS code is 6838
  • Passport Copy
  • *Bank Statement – statement must be issued on bank letter head with original signature. Must be dated within six month of the first enrollment according to the following dates:

Fall Semester: January 1 or later
Spring Semester: May 1 or later

Bank statement must have the following amounts:

  • **Sponsor Letter – letter should certify the following:
    • Sponsor’s commitment to pay educational, living, health, and personal expenses
    • Letter must be dated within six months of the first enrollment: Fall Semester, January 1 or later, Spring Semester, May 1 or later
  • Meningitis Form – all students under 22 years of age as of the first class date must submit proof of bacterial meningitis

*You do not need to submit a sponsor letter if your bank statement is under your name.
**You may have up to two sponsors.
