NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
The University provides instruction and resources that foster independent learning, enabling the graduate to contribute to a profession or field of study.Graduate curricula provide a variety of different course formats that foster independent learning and require the application of knowledge and skills to specific problems. Examples of graduate course formats include:
| Seminars/Studies – | Courses that allow for intensive/in-depth study or investigation on a particular topic. Usually held in informal settings using group study, discussion and student presentations. |
| Practica - | Provide supervised practice in departmentally approved settings. Practica allow students to apply their knowledge of the discipline in real-life settings and may require related scholarly paper of the experience. May include evaluation by on-site preceptor in professional field as well as faculty. |
| Internships - | Post practicum experiences in departmentally approved settings. Includes application of knowledge to real-life situations and may require a scholarly paper related to the experience. May also include evaluation by a clinical preceptor of readiness for independent practice. |
| Theses - | Formal scholarly studies resulting from independent research on a problem selected in consultation with the student's major professor. |
Examples of resources that foster independent learning include opportunities for students to work with faculty on their research, often resulting in joint presentations at conferences or colloquia. Limited student travel funds are available to support this activity. The University and colleges/schools also sponsor research colloquia which allow for presentations by graduate students.
