Poland Trip

Reading the Globe Main Photo

For Spring Break 2009, a group of Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students undertook a historic study tour of Poland as part of “Reading the Globe: the TAMIU Freshman Experience,” the TAMIU campus-wide reading initiative.

The students were selected for the travel opportunity based on personal essays they submitted on the "Reading the Globe" selected text, Gerda Weissmann Klein’s “All But My Life.” The students’ travel was made possible in part by the generosity of the Lupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation of Laredo.

Klein’s book, a memoir of a young Jewish girl’s Nazi enslavement in Poland and ultimate liberation by American soldiers, formed the backdrop for the TAMIU tour.

  • See Images from the Tour.
  • Read an essay by Diana Grace, student traveler.
  • Thoughts on the project by a student participant.
  • Review an online journal documenting the tour.
