Chile & Argentina Winter Program

Program Information

The College of Arts and Sciences is offering a two and a half week study abroad program in Chile & Argentina.  The program will focus on Spanish literature, Spanish Culture, and Political Science.  Students studying literature will develop a deeper analysis of Chilean and Argentinian authors through lectures and guided site visits. For students studying political science, they will experience firsthand political democratic systems of Chile and Argentina. Students attending this program will gain greater knowledge of global issues that face the world by exploration and examination of lives, culture, history, politics, political institutions, language, and literature of Latin America.

During the program, students will study in classrooms in Valparaiso, Viña del Mar, Santiago and Buenos Aires. Among other sites of interest, field excursions include a variety of boat and city tours, Archealogical Museum Fonck, Parliament, the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, a guided tour of the Presidential Palace, National Museum of History and Paseo Ahumada, La Chascona, and a vineyard tour with lunch in Barrio Vellavista. Included in the program estimated cost of $3,500 are all scheduled program activities, housing, 3 meals/day while with host families and breakfast daily while at hotels, transportation, admissions fees and guide fee. Program Cost

The estimated program cost is $ 3,500. This excludes the roundtrip airfare, Visa fees and TAMIU tuition/fees.

Application Process

  • Turn in your TAMIU study abroad application and process the application fee by the stated deadline
  • Apply for any of the TAMIU study abroad scholarships for which you qualify
  • The financial aid budget form will be sent to the Office of Financial Aid
  • Complete and turn in your Waiver and Liability Packet by Friday, November 22nd

Study Abroad Scholarships

TAMIU/OSA offers two scholarships for study abroad.  Qualified TAMIU students may complete their application and supporting documents and submit them to OSA together with their study abroad application.  You will be notified via email of your award and the award disbursement date.

PSCI 3308: Latin American Political Systems

PSCI 4390: Undergraduate Research in Political Science

 

Graduate students – 

SPAN 5347: Topic in Spanish American Literature

SPAN 5350: Professional Paper

PSCI 5373: Advanced Seminar in Latin American Politics

PSCI 5310: Directed Research in Political Science

 

Program Requirements

Students must have been approved by Dr. Lola Norris (SPAN and HUM) or by Dr. James Norris (PSCI) for acceptance into the program.

Refunds**

Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be made in writing to OSA. The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program. After this, TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by OSA. Refunds will be calculated from the date OSA is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw. TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.

*TAMIU reserves the right to make changes to this itinerary as deemed appropriate by the program director due to unforeseen circumstances. However, every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary as closely as possible

**TAMIU reserves the right to adjust program fees or cancel any program without prior notification; however, every effort will be made to provide information on cancellations in a timely manner. In the event of cancellation, TAMIU will refund application fees and recoverable program fees.
