Leadership Abroad

Program Dates

July 5 - 23, 2014


The College of Arts and Sciences will offer a three-week study abroad program in Rome, Italy led by Dr. Minita Ramierz, VP for Student Success.  Course work will focus on International Leadership.  Cultural events include a tour of Rome, visit to the Spoleto medival center, visit to Santa Maria dei Fiori, among other activities.

While in Italy, students will have a combination of lectures and field excursions to enhance their understanding of the different types of leadership. The students will participate in a service project with Florence University. Included in the estimated program cost of $6,120 are all scheduled program activities, round-trip airfare from Laredo to Rome, housing (hotels), breakfast, welcome and farewell dinner, local transportation and health insurance.(Program Flyer)

Week 1 - July 5 - July 11



CISabroad orientation, walking tour of Rome, welcome dinner, visits to the Forums, Colosseum, Palatine Hill, guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel

On the way to Perugia stop in Spoleto to tour of the medieval center, Roman aqueduct, orientation and walking tour, Day trip to Santa Maria degli Angeli

Week 2 - July 12 - July 18



Visit Galleria Nazionale, Palazzo dei Priori, Colegio del Cambio, tour of churches and saints of Perugia, Etruscan Hypogeum of Volumni Family

On the way to Florence stop in Deruta for a tour of Ubaldo Grazia Maoiliche Ceramiche. Walking tour of Florence, visit Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens. Meet with Florence University to do a service project.

Week 3 - July 19 - July 23



Free weekend to explore.

Farewell dinner


Students will reside in hotels and hostels.

Program Cost

The estimated program cost is $6,120. This excludes extra meals and TAMIU tuition/fees.

Application Process

  • Turn in your TAMIU study abroad application and submit the application fee at the Bursars Office
  • Apply for any of the TAMIU study abroad scholarships
  • OSA will provide your program budget to the Office of Financial Aid
  • Complete and turn in your Waiver and Liability Packet by April 25, 2014

Study Abroad Scholarships

TAMIU offers two scholarships for study abroad.  Qualified TAMIU students may complete their application and supporting documents and submit them to OSA together with their study abroad application.  You will be notified via email of your award and the award disbursement date.

Program Requirements

Students must have been approved by Dr. Ramirez for acceptance into the program.


Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be made in writing to OSA.  The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program.  The application fee will be applied to your total program cost.  After this, TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by OSA.  Refunds will be calculated from the date OSA is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw.  TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.

*TAMIU reserves the right to make changes to this itinerary as deemed appropriate by the program leader due to unforeseen circumstances.  However, every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary as closely as possible.

**TAMIU reserves the right to adjust program fees or cancel any program without prior notification; however, every effort will be made to provide information on cancellations in a timely manner.  In the event of cancellation, TAMIU will refund application fees and recoverable program fees.
