Title V -EEP Students Perspective on College Algebra, February 25, 2009
The Title V-EEP in collaboration with Laredo Community College aims to provide the TAMIU mathematics faculty with professional development opportunities that will ensure mathematics learning and instruction of the highest quality for all College Algebra students. These efforts will focus on improving faculty skills in organizing and integrating knowledge for students, developing pedagogical skills, sharpening performance skills, gaining experience in serving effectively different groups of students in the classroom, and learning how to use technology to enhance teaching and learning.
The Title V Professional Development Plan for College Algebra Preparedness involves the acquisition of knowledge and/or development of skills related to some aspects of the faculty member’s professional responsibilities. The expected outcome of the Title V Collaborative effort will be the redesigning of curriculum, teaching, and learning experiences through the use of technology and professional development to promote student achievement, retention, and graduation rates.
Below are the target areas for the Title V Faculty Development Program:
- Understanding, Serving & Integrating under-prepared minorities:
- Using strategies to assist under-prepared students
- Integrating and supporting diversity in the classroom
- Understanding cultural diversity to facilitate student-faculty interaction
- Effective Use of Technology in the Classroom:
- Using Smart Board technologies to accelerate students’ achievement
- Incorporating multi-media presentations into hybrid courses
- Integrating technology into developmental coursework
- Improving Teaching techniques:
- Designing and implementing student-directed learning experiences
- Promote classroom discussion as a way of teaching
- Design effective discussion activities through group work
- Understanding pedagogical underpinnings of teacher-centered instruction
- Designing and implementing problem-based teaching
- Facilitating or mentoring learning communities

Title V is a cooperative grant shared by Laredo Community College (Lead Institution) and Texas A&M International University (Partner Institution). The five year grant was awarded in October 2007 and is funded via the U. S. Department of Education Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions program. According to the Department of Education's web site, "This program helps eligible institutions of higher education enhance and expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional stability, management, and fiscal capabilities of eligible institutions.
