Mathematics Weekend Retreats
This project offers Hispanic and other minority senior and junior students in the area high schools weekend retreats to assist
them in their mathematics courses, thus enabling them to be successful in securing college entry, develop a more
sophisticated understanding of their own study skills and strengths, and develop learning communities of peers.
Benefits to students:
- Participants receive free software, education materials, and supplies.
- Sessions are conducted by experienced TAMIU mathematics faculty.
- Each workshop participant learns to use a scientific/graphing calculator for mathematics problem solving.
- Participants are provided with academic advising and tutoring throughout the sessions.
- Sessions help participants succeed in freshman level mathematics courses at TAMIU.
- Participants gain experience working in groups.

STEM Recruitment and Enrichment Project (STEM-REP)
The goal of this project is to improve the recruitment and preparation of Hispanic and other minority students through participation in summer workshops and a follow-up science and engineering exhibit. Workshop sessions will be conducted by discipline-specific instructors with emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Benefits to students:
- High school students may attend one of three workshops each summer. Each workshop is two-week long and free of charge.
- Students will receive a laptop to use during the workshop. The laptop will allow students to fully participate in the workshop activities.

Pre-Engineering Cohort (PE-Cohort)
The purpose of this project is to create a pre-engineering cohort to improve the recruitment and retention of highly motivated Hispanic and other minority students. Students will participate in an enrichment program at TAMU during the summer following the end of their first year at TAMIU. This program will expose students to the various engineering fields and emphasize critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Benefits to students:
- Participants will receive a laptop to allow them full participation in the workshop activities and successfully complete their coursework during the two years they are in the cohort.
- Participants are required to attend a free two-week workshop at TAMU-College Station.
- Each workshop participant receives $500 to cover daily expenses.
- Participants receive advising and tutoring services throughout the year.

This project offers a pre-freshman camp for incoming Hispanic and other minority students to help these students make connections between mathematics and science to encourage success in freshman chemistry and physics courses, to develop more sophisticated understanding of their own study skills and strengths, and to develop learning communities of peers.
Benefits to students:
- Participants attend a free workshop at TAMIU.
- Each workshop participant receives $300 per week for daily expenses.
- Participants receive free supplies (pens, paper, etc.).
