STEM Research Experiences to Enhance Retention (STEM-REER)
This project offers real-world learning experiences to outstanding Hispanic and other minority students majoring in mathematics, engineering, biology, physical science, or computer science at TAMIU. The program awards 10 internships and 20 research assistantships to highly qualified students. Interns will be placed in private industry or government positions and mentored by the client organization. Research assistants will be placed with faculty members conducting research in computer science, mathematics, biology, physics, or engineering. 

Benefits to students:

  • Research Assistants are paid $10/hour.
  • Student Interns are paid $12.5/hour ($1,000 per month).
  • Students have the opportunity to present their research results at professional conference.

College Algebra Support Project (CASP)
The main goal of this project is to increase the pass rate in College Algebra.  The approach is based on the belief that students learn mathematics by doing it.  Homework and laboratory projects will be used to help students understand concepts and build problem solving skills. 

Benefits to students:

  • Students receive tutoring and help sessions.
  • Students receive help with homework and lab assignments.
  • Lab/Teaching Assistants are paid $10/hour.

Counseling Support Services
A series of 12 outreach modules will be made available to STEM students. These modules will deal with different ways of overcoming school related anxiety and will teach students a means of using metacognition in learning situations.  Fully accredited clinical support and consultation will be available to students to address extreme complications in personal and social identity and adjustment issues.

Benefits to students:

  • 12 outreach modules are available to interested students.
  • Students may seek counseling support services.

STEM-Endowment
STEM-RRG will establish a $500,000 endowment fund to provide scholarships to students pursuing degrees in STEM programs. Department of Education funds are matched by donors solicited through the Office of Institutional Advancement.
