TAMIU Annual Report 2019

2019 Annual Report / AWORLDOF DIFFERENCE middle class andhigher. Inanewstudymeasuring returnon investment (ROI) of a post-secondary degree publishedbyGeorgetownUniversity, TAMIUwas ranked 9th out of 84 four-year schools in Texas. The ROI, measured as net present value, showed that after 40 years the value of a TAMIUdegree addedover $1,000,000 to an individual’s earnings. Thesefigures againdemonstrate the transformational impact TAMIU has had on our graduates and community. Themost powerful transformational impactwe have hadhas been inproviding access tohigher education to individuals and families these past 50 years. In 2000, over 75%of graduates identified themselves as the first in their family to graduate from college. This past year, that number has dropped to slightly over 50%. As a result, we are seeing more siblings as well asmore second- and third-generation students graduating from TAMIU. This transformation is exemplifiedbyOliviaCoronawhograduated in 2013. Both her mother, Minerva Corona ( ’77) and aunt, Oralia Jalomo ( ’82), graduated fromTAMIU, setting expectations for future generations. Another prime example is the Buckley family. James Buckley ( ’02) was the 1,000 student to enroll in the Graduate School. His latemother, Esther Buckley ( ’75), a popular Laredo science teacher, was the University’s 3,000 student, enrolling in 1998. Other family members have also graduated fromTAMIU, including James’s sisters TrinaBratton ( ’99), RebeccaRodríguez ( ’04) and Jennifer Torres (’10)... and nephews Sean Bratton, SamBratton and Rene Peña. The legacy that they all have leftwill impact their families for generations to come. This is the transformational impact that TAMIU has on this community and beyond: lives changed, opportunities realized and futures measurably brightened…metamorphosis at every level. In these pages, we celebrate these milestones in our history. We recognize the “Worldof Difference” TAMIUhasmade in the lives of our alumni, our faculty, our staff and the communities we proudly serve. We invite you to come to campus, to see what exciting things we have going on, to reminisce about your own transformation…and to be part of our ongoing story.
