NEWFACULTY @TAMIU DR. MOMEN, DR. CARDONA-LÓPEZ CELEBRATE BOOK PUBLICATIONS This year, two TAMIU faculty members celebrated the book publications. Dr. Mehnaaz Momen , associate professor of Public Administration, published her book titled, “Living Dhaka, Leaving Dhaka: Memories of Bangladesh” (Razia Rahman, 2022). Also, Dr. José Cardona-López, Regents Professor of Spanish American Literature, published his book in Spanish titled, “La vieja Inés: (Todo sobre el caso Torres Villaquirán) (Ediciones Eón, 2022),” translated as “The Old Inés: (Everything about the Torres Villaquirán Case).” Dr. Momen’s “Living Dhaka, Leaving Dhaka” explores the story of a girl growing up in Bangladesh during the turbulent post-liberation period. This was a time of enormous transition, as the country went through various social experiments ranging from socialism to capitalism, secularism to religious fundamentalism, and class hierarchy to upward mobility. It brings to life an increasingly forgotten perspective about what it feels like to grow up as a girl in a traditional society. Dr. Cardona’s “La vieja Inés” is a short novel, or nouvelle , and dives into the oppressive and absurd Torres Villaquirán case in a serious and at the same, comical manner. The book offers a satire against a society that favors killings. It is a mockery against expressions of power, which for its rigor and effectiveness, is based on the ambiguous and curly language that is usually present in its laws.
