TAMIU Annual Report 2024

THE RHIZOME EXPERIENCE TRULY SHINES @ TAMIU The unveiling of “Rhizome,” TAMIU’s first historic, large-scale art installation, took place in April and included a broad spectrum of dance, musical, poetry, and theatrical performances in an evening-long celebration. “Rhizome” is a multidisciplinary contemporary art project organized by TAMIU Artist and visiting assistant professor Crystal Wagner. It involved collaboration between faculty and students in art, dance, humanities, music, theater, and the Laredo community. Combined, all created a fully dynamic conversation on art, culture, community, place-making, and sustainability in a memorable fashion. The Rhizome installation dominated interior and exterior Center for the Fine and Performing Arts spaces. It used colorful RPET fabric made from recycled plastic bottles as part of its commitment to explore sustainability and create powerful awareness forged at the intersection of art, community, and environmentalism.
