TAMIU Annual Report 2025

32 TAMIU’S MPA PROGRAM MARKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH CELEBRATION In October, TAMIU’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program commemorated its 25th Anniversary with a campus event recognizing its impact and alumni contributions to public service in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library’s Helen Richter Watson Gallery. Accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), the TAMIU MPA was created for midcareer professionals working in the nonprofit and public sectors. Since its 1999 launch, the program has evolved in curriculum, enrollment, faculty strength, and productivity, said Dr. Peter Haruna, program director and professor of Public Administration. The program has earned national recognition by graduating 250 professionals and maintaining NASPAA accreditation. “Initially, our students were primarily Webb County residents,” Dr. Haruna said, “Over the years, we’ve seen growing interest from across South Texas and other states. What began as a traditional in-person program has become fully online, allowing us to better serve working professionals,” he said. Graduates now serve in roles including city managers, treasurers, directors, administrators, and school officials. The celebration included reflections on the program’s history and recognition of distinguished alumni. Read more at go.tamiu.edu/mpa25anniversary. NEW TAMIU VIDEO TRACES PURSUIT OF UNDERGRAD DEGREE A TAMIU video offered insight into earning an undergraduate degree at TAMIU through the perspective of Spring 2025 graduate Tanya González de La Miyar, Distinguished Student Scholar for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. In “TAMIU Graduation Chronicles,” produced by the Office of Public Relations, Marketing, and Information Services, González shares her path to graduation. Her story is anchored by childhood memories on campus and involvement in TAMIU community outreach efforts like Discover TAMIU – events that her mother, Gina De la Miyar González, a TAMIU graduate (’99, ’01) and former associate vice president for Student Success, helped lead. “I was lucky to have found this beautiful campus as a baby. My mom worked as a TAMIU administrator...long before I was a student I was roaming around campus,” González said. González earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. At TAMIU, she was active in the TAMIU National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, studied abroad in Japan, and completed a clinical practicum. This Fall, she began her pursuit of a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology at UT Health San Antonio. Read more at go.tamiu.edu/gradchronicles-tanya. Watch the Video at go.tamiu.edu/tanyagrad-vid.
