TAMIU Annual Report 2025

38 ‘DARK MATTER’ SHINES A LIGHT ON PARTICLE PHYSICS WITH SPECIAL LECTURE SPONSORED BY PHILANTHROPIST BENAVIDES A world-renowned authority on particle physics presented a special lecture at TAMIU this October that drew back the curtain on the mysterious world of Dark Matter. Dr. Timothy R. Andeen, associate professor of particle physics at the University of Texas at Austin, presented “The Search for Dark Matter: Collision Course – Particle Physics on the Energy Frontier” to an overflow crowd at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall. The special lecture was made possible through the generosity of Memo Benavides, longtime TAMIU partner and Laredo philanthropist who welcomed the crowd to the lecture and helped introduce Dr. Andeen. Dr. Andeen said he enjoys sharing the fascinating world of particle physics. "I’m always excited to share the new surprises that researchers from Texas are uncovering looking at the smallest building blocks of the universe. This is a great time in particle physics as we're developing powerful particle colliders and detectors and finding ways to apply our discoveries to enhancing everyday lives," Andeen explained. Andeen conducts experimental searches for new particles and interactions and investigates electroweak symmetry breaking through his research. His research in experimental particle physics is focused on searching for exotic new particles using the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, while improving its sensitivity through new instrumentation.
