This
course is designed to introduce junior-senior level biology
students to the science and techniques of biotechnology using plants
as a model and plant specific techniques. The theory behind and practical
aspects of the following techniques will be discussed in lecture and
used in the laboratory: cell disruption, differential centrifugation,
DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, genetic fingerprinting via the
polymerase chain reaction, protoplast fusion and transformation of
plant genome by Ti plasmids.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Laboratory fee:
$15.00.
