An
examination of both prisons and jails as "total institutions."
The course will include the history of prisons, various philosophies
of incarceration, organizational structure, institutional subcultures,
and problems encountered in the classification and supervision of
incarcerated offenders. Prerequisite for CRIJ majors: Successful
completion of lower-level CRIJ courses (or equivalent courses) required
for the CRIJ major. Prerequisite for non-CRIJ majors:
Junior standing.
