SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREES IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

:

All applicants seeking a Master of Science Degree in Education, or any graduate course work in the College of Education must possess a minimum of three years of teaching experience and complete an application to Graduate School in the Office of the Dean of Education in order to be considered for admission. The applicants will be encouraged to complete the GRE requirements, if needed, prior to applying. A committee will review applications and accompanying documentation to determine the eligibility of the applicant for admission. Applicants who do not possess the minimum requirements and who wish to be considered, may request to be reviewed by the Special Admissions Committee. The committee process will involve, in part, the preparation of any essay, the successful completion of a set of written questions, an interview or a combination of any of the above. Interested individuals should contact the Office of the Dean in the College of Education.

To complete the degree, the following requirements must be met:

1. Major-minor Requirements: Eighteen (18) to twenty-one (21) hours in a major subject and twelve (12) to fifteen (15) hours in a minor or specialized area. The minor may be divided between two subjects, with not less than six (6) hours and at least one (1) 5000-level course in each subject. Electives are taken to complete the thirty-six (36) hours for the degree.

2. Prerequisites (Stemwork): Eighteen (18) hours of course work, including twelve (12) advanced hours, in education. For each minor: twelve (12) hours of undergraduate work, including six (6) advanced hours. The College of Education, however, retains the right to examine the applicant's prerequisites- and to accept certain equivalent hours or to require additional work.

3. Thesis: The graduate student is expected to complete a thesis related to the major field of study. Students must enroll in the Research and Thesis courses offered by the department in which they are receiving their degree.

4. Comprehensive Examination: A comprehensive examination shall be passed by the candidate covering the major field and the Thesis. The passing score will be valid for one year.

Graduate students having a minor in psychology must show mastery of the major objectives in each of the psychology courses taken. Mastery is defined as earning at least a "B" in each of these courses. If a student earns a grade lower than a "B" on any graduate level psychology course, he/she must enroll in the course again and earn a grade of at least a "B" to satisfy the course requirements.

5. A Second Master's Degree: Students shall not be permitted to apply the same course credit to more than one master's degree.
