Welcome to the TAMIU CPR Training Center!

Passing on CPR

A new survey shows that only half of Americans can be counted on to perform CPR, mainly because they worry they could unintentionally injure the victim. Longtime CPR instructor Gustavo E. Flores, M.D. says it best: "If your patient is in...sudden cardiac arrest, there's nothing you can do that can make him worse."

CPR Courses We Offer:

  • Heartsaver- for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in First Aid, CPR and AED use to meet a job, regulatory or other requirement.
  • BLS- for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.
  • ACLS- for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units.

Please note: AHA has updated certification cards to eCards in order to improve quality and security of training. As a reminder, only you can claim your eCard at this time; it cannot be claimed by someone on your behalf.

Available course types:

  • Blended Online CPR Courses- Take part 1 Online from the American Heart Association (https://onlineaha.org/), then schedule the skills practice/testing with us here in the TAMIU Student Center. We hold these skills practice/testing sessions on the second Tuesday of each month from 6-10pm. This is a convenient option to get CPR certified. You call and schedule your skills exam.
    • Once you have completed the course please download and e-mail the completion certificate to cpr@tamiu.edu.  You can then call us at 956 326-2829 to schedule the Practice and Skills Testing after you have completed part 1.  The cost for the skills practice and testing session is $50.  This includes the cost of the AHA card.

    • What to Wear to Skills Session

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be practicing skills that require kneeling, bending, standing, and lifting.
  • Instructor Led Courses- Take all parts in the classroom with an instructor. They are available for groups needing CPR Certification. Courses are held on TAMIU campus once a month.

    • Physical Conditions

If you have any physical conditions that might prevent these activities, please tell one of the instructors. The instructor may be able to adjust the equipment to accommodate you. In the event that you are ill, please notify your instructor to reschedule your training.
    • Pre-Course Information

In order to successfully complete the course you will need to pass the required skills tests. BLS courses also require a written exam. You must be present during the entire course.

Community Outreach:

Learn Hands Only CPR!

Watch the awareness video, learn the beat, and practice this lifesaving skill! It only takes 60 seconds to learn to save a life! According to the American Heart Association, each year over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.

We help the American Heart Association to raise awareness and numbers of people trained to help increase bystander response rates in cardiac emergencies. By 2020, the AHA aims to train 20 million people in the lifesaving skills of CPR and want to double the out-of-hospital bystander CPR rate, from 31% to 62%. To help the AHA to achieve these goals we participate in community events to teach Hands-Only CPR. These CPR awareness trainings are reported to the AHA.

Join us in celebrating CPR Week June 1-7! On December 13, 2007, Congress unanimously passed a resolution to set aside June 1-7 each year as National CPR and AED Awareness Week to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. In the declaration, Congress asked states and municipalities to make AEDs more publicly accessible.
