Dusty's Junior University Summer Camp 2019

Investigative Journalism The distribution and quality of news is ex- tremely important in society today. How we get our news will greatly influence what the public views as important and current. There are multiple skills required for successful jour- nalists such as writing, information gathering and critical reading. These skills will be taught to our young campers in a fun and innovative way. They will have a chance to voice what they feel are important issues and project these views effectively. They will practice other skills like interviewing, researching and working together as a team to successfully create the first ever Dusty’s Junior U Newspaper. Session 2, Block 3 Core Class (Grammar & Algebra Boot Camp) Grammar and Algebra seem to be two areas that require consistent practice for young students. Help your student master these challenging subjects by enrolling them in this refresher course. They will review the basics of algebra, reviewing how to graph, solve linear equations and use geometry. As for grammar, punctuation rules will be reviewed, elevated vocabulary will also be introduced and they will practice how to successfully peer review. This core class review will give them the tools and confidence needed in upcoming years. This will be a month long course. Session 1, Block 1 Session 2, Block 1 Career Explorers Students will explore a variety of career paths. Campers will learn how to construct a resume, review proper interview etiquette such as how to dress, what time to arrive and even how to answer popular interview questions. They will have the chance to partake in a mock inter- view with their teacher and peers. Different professionals will share their day to day with the campers at the end of each session. Session 1, Block 3 Youth Leadership Campers will learn how a leader should engage the community. Our goal is to motivate our campers to make things happen in the commu- nity and bring about change. This course will be about setting goals, learning to be respon- sible, building personal leadership skills and building up confidence in teamwork. Session 4, Block 1 STEM STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students will be more proac- tive in incorporating these subjects into fun enrichment hands on activities and interactive projects such as: constructing a roller coaster, a ferris wheel, and so forth.
