On April 1, 2017, two TAMIU school counseling interns, Erika Vasquez and Aileen Espinoza hosted an event on behalf of the Texas Academy of International and STEM Studies to raise money and offer two scholarships for the students of this school.
The purpose for creating this scholarship was to give every student at the Texas Academy an opportunity for additional monies that can be applied to college tuition. The application was not based on GPA or class rank.
Laredo’s local Applebee’s Bar and Grill assisted the interns with the event by hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser. Customers who purchased a ticket were provided with a drink, a side, and a stack of pancakes. Over 200 tickets were sold and $1200 was raised. Two students will be chosen to receive a $600 scholarship. Special thanks to Mrs. Naiely Saldana, counselor and the Texas Academy students.
