The TAMIU College of Education Educator Preparation program is devoted to getting students certified and ready for the classroom. Our programs prepare students to become early childhood and elementary teachers. We also help students from other majors become certified classroom teachers at the middle- and high-school levels. Our professional certification programs prepare students for administrative and supporting roles in schools. Our services include test prepration, diagnostic tests and approval for TEA (Texas Education Agency) certification testing.

TExES Content Exam Preparation Process for Teacher Certification

  1. Presentation of Certification Process during (Block I) or when necessary. Students are to complete assigned assignments to demonstrate test readiness prior to practice exam.
    1.  Assignments to complete are based on testing content area of student:
      1. Practice Manual for content or testing area chosen (https://www.tx.nesinc.com/)
        1. Go to your content preparation materials on the website and download preparation manual for your content area.
        2. Complete practice test (towards the end of manual) and submit answer document (provided in content area in blackboard) once you assess yourself with a number grade.
      2. ETS Praxis ( https://www.ets.org/praxis/prepare/materials )
      3. Certify Teacher ( https://www.certifyteacher.com/)
        1. 240 minimum score on all exams.
          1. Student will go to office (KLM 426) to obtain a Certify Teacher application for access after payment to business office. Subscription is good for three years.
          2. Submit scores only showing name of teacher candidate and scores
      4. TCERT (80% passing rate on all domains) ( https://pact.tarleton.edu/tcert/Login/LoginForm.cfm)
  2. Once assignments are complete and uploaded to Blackboard under TExES Test Prep student becomes eligible to take Representative (Rep) exam based on scheduled test dates. Complete Rep Exam Request (found in content area) form once all assignments are complete. Deadline to submit Rep Exam Request form is one week from scheduled test date for processing. You will complete this form for every attempt of the Representative exam once you are eligible by doing preparation assignments and intervention plans as assigned if you have previous failed attempts. Student must obtain an 80% minimum passing score on all domains for the Rep exam.
    1. Exceptions: Principal Exam (73% minimum passing score) and Ed. diagnosticians’ exams must obtain a 75% minimum passing score.
  3. When student attains minimum passing score then student becomes eligible to take state exam.
    1. If student is not successful, student is to complete remediation plan (found in content area) prior to conferencing with TExES Coordinator. Plan to be implemented will be based on data to include:
      1. State exam report (if applicable)
      2. Rep exam report/s
        1. Items reviewed and addressed are Domains and Competencies along with review of study material and study process. Timeline established for quick checks (to see your progress).
      3. Student will retake TCERT and or Certify Teacher when applicable with minimum passing scores as stated in step 1. Student will also retake Rep exam and obtain minimum passing score. Intervention plan and timeline used to check progress.
  4. When student passes appropriate state exam, student will continue with educational process and pursue other applicable exams if needed up to applying for certification upon graduation.

How do I access the materials?

  1. Visit the Certify Teacher site
  2. Select the online version of study guide you wish to purchase using the provide promo code and select "Buy Now". Be sure to note the Operating system and browser requirements for the program.
  3. On the My Shopping Cart page, under the Apply Promo Code option, select "Login".
  4.  Login to certifyteacher.com to process your purchase using the promo code.
    1. If you do not already have an account through certifyteacher.com, please create an account under the "I don't have an account yet" option, and follow the prompts provide .
  5. Enter your promo code TAMIU4728 when prompted. The price will drop to the discounted price after entering the promo code.

Required Dyslexia, Mental health, substance abuse, and youth suicide training resources:

Effective December 27, 2016, 19 TAC §228.30(c)(3) requires educator preparation programs to provide instruction regarding mental health, substance abuse, and youth suicide to candidates seeking initial certification in any certification class. The mental health instruction must include effective strategies for teaching and intervening with students with mental or emotional disorders, including de-escalation techniques and positive behavioral interventions and supports. The resources listed below have been recommended to meet these requirements.

NOTE TO CANDIDATES: Completion of all required trainings must be documented BEFORE certification can be recommended. It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide documentation. Candidates MUST print out their training certificates of completion to include in their portfolios and provide a copy.


Texas Behavior Support Initiative Training (Mental Health)

The Texas Behavior Support Initiative (TBSI) training is designed to provide foundational knowledge for the use of positive behavior interventions and supports for all students, including those with disabilities. While the TBSI training meets legislative requirements related to procedures for the use of restraint and time-out, it also provides a framework for sharing a wide range of foundation-level behavior strategies and prevention-based school-wide, classroom, and individual interventions.

ASK Suicide Prevention Training (Suicide Prevention)

This online training is intended to meet Texas K-12 public school suicide prevention training requirements and other suicide prevention training needs. It is a best practice based training listed in the BPR Section III Adherence to Standards. Provides participants with an overview of the basic epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behavior, including risk and protective factors through a five-part video series, participants are trained to recognize warning signs—behaviors and characteristics that might indicate elevated risk for suicidal behavior—and how to intervene with a person they think might be at risk for suicide.

Dyslexia:  Characteristics, Identification, and Effective Strategies

Information regarding an online course that meets the requirements for House Bill 157. The online course includes the history of dyslexia, district requirements, procedures, statistics, recognizing the signs of dyslexia, intervention strategies as well as options for parents of students with dyslexia can be found here.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training (Substance Abuse) -   

  MHFA is an 8-hour face-to-face course that trains participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training includes: risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems; information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and addiction disorders; a 5-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health problem or in crisis; and where to turn for help – professional, peer, and self-help resources. MHFA teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well.

Don’t Forget to PRINT out your Certificates of Completion for each required training and place one copy in your portfolio and submit a copy.

Beginning September 1, 2015, candidates will be limited to four (4) retaikes for any certification examination.

Students who have completed all of the certification program requirements and the steps to becoming a teacher will be recommended to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for certification by our certification officer.
Yes! If you hold a Bachelor's degree in a field other than education, but would like to become teacher certified, we encourage you to learn more about our Alternative Certification Program.
As per TAC 227.15.e, TAMIU is unable to to provide resources prior to admission into the EPP, however, Pearson has some great resources available to the public - you can find them here.
