Alternative Certification Program (ACP)

The Alternative Certification Program (ACP) prepares and transitions eligible, previously-degreed teacher candidate for careers as classroom teachers in Hispanic communities. Eligible candidates are selected and prepared in accordance with the guidelines, criteria, and standards set forth by the State Board of Educator Certification. The Education Texas Administrative Code allows teacher candidates who have not obtained a teaching standard certificate to provisionally meet the requirements by participating in a State approved and regulated alternative route to certification.

ACP applicants must demonstrate content proficiency for the content area/grade levels in which they are seeking certification by passing the TExES Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) to be considered for TAMIU Alternative Certification Program admission. ACP participants will complete the program curriculum and certification requirements by participating in a Pre-Service phase and an internship.

The Pre-Service phase includes online seminars and coursework, field experiences, and TExES Bilingual Education Supplemental or English as a Second Language exam preparation. After Pre-Service completion, ACP participants must secure a teaching position with one of the ACP’s collaborative school districts to complete an internship. During the internship, ACP interns are the teacher of record while continuing ACP requirements and TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) testing.

ACP interns must pass all necessary certification exams, successfully, complete a one year internship as teacher of record, coursework, and all other requirements associated with ACP to be recommended for a standard Texas Educator Certificate.
