TAMIU Spring 2023 Commencement Program

DISTINGUISHED STUDENT SCHOLARS Ashley Jannett Hernández College of Arts & Sciences Ashley J. Hernández is the daughter of Alberto J. Hernández and María S. Hernández. She was born in Laredo, graduating from Lyndon B. Johnson High School in 2020. Today, she completes her Bachelor of Arts and Sciences with a major in English and Secondary Certifica- tion in two years and four months. She is graduating Magna Cum Laude. While at TAMIU, Ashley was a founder and officer of The Page Turners, a member of the University Honors Program and Arabic Club, and an officer of the Texas Association of Future Educators. She competed in undergraduate research, presenting primary, qualitative research about the effects of COVID-19 on the educational system. Ashley plans to continue her studies by earning a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in English. Born and raised in Laredo, Karelly Tamez is the daughter of Osvaldo and Atanacia Tamez. She graduated from United High School in 2019. Today, she earns a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Concentration in Marketing, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 3.95 GPA. While a student at TAMIU, Karelly was Records Commissioner of The International Student Business Network and was inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain in the summer of 2022 with The Council on Internation- al Educational Exchange. She received the Sanchez Family Foundation Scholarship, the Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez International Fellows Scholarship, and appeared on the Dean’s List often. Upon graduation, she plans to begin her professional career as a digital marketing manager and pursue an MBA in Marketing. Her longtime goals are to work in the music industry and earn an additional degree in Music Management. Karelly Tamez A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Carmen González College of Nursing and Health Sciences Originally from Laredo, Carmen González is the daughter of Brenda and Mario González. She attended United High School and transferred to TAMIU’s Julieta & Frank Staggs Academy of International and STEM Studies, concluding her last two years and graduating from high school while completing prerequisites for the TAMIU Nursing program in 2021. Today, she earns a Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.86 GPA. While a student at TAMIU, Carmen served as the Secretary of the Staggs Academy National Honors Society and was an active member of the Student Council. She participated in com- munity service projects as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She received the Achievement Scholarship, Dr. F. & N. Leal Scholarship, and was awarded first place for a group presentation on mental health at the TAMIU Service-Learning Expo. Upon graduation, Carmen plans to begin her professional career as a pediatric nurse and pursue a graduate degree in a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.
