NOTE: That this web page can be slow in loading so be patient!

Here are some basic questions about reading maps and aerial photographs using terraserver (an on-line map service).  Type in Laredo, TX in the find box and click on the go button.

(1)  Print-out (large image size) an aerial photograph at 8 m resolution that has your home on it and circle it (or at least the place where you home is today if it did not exist in the early to mid-1990's).

(2)  Go to Image Info link.  Tell me verbally what exactly it means that this aerial photo has an 8 m resolution.  Be sure to define what is a pixel is when answering this question?

Questions 3 to 5 specifically deal with the aerial photograph of Laredo, TX. Print out the aerial photograph at 16 m resolution  (large image size) with Bridge 2 in the lower left part of the print-out.

(3)  All maps must have a scale.  This scale can be in either Metric or English.  Define the term scale.  Also, please tell me how many centimeters on the map is equivalent to one kilometer on the earth's surface

(4)  How far is it in miles from the southern edge of Lake Casa Blanca to Bridge 2.

(5) On the sides of your print-out indicate the geographic directions (north, south, east, west).

Look at the Laredo map on-line in terraserver and answer questions 6 and 7.

(6)  Find TAMIU on the Laredo map (you may need to scroll up a map using the arrow button).  Does the campus look complete?  If not explain!

(7) What is the latitude and longitude of TAMIU (can find under Image Info).  Do not know what latitude and longitude is?  Look it up in Lab 21 of your lab manual as this concept will be an important part of next week's lab.
