Fly Dance Comes to Laredo Feb. 9, 10, 11

An explosion of dance is coming to Laredo in the form of Fly Dance Company, an all-male contemporary dance company from Houston.

Dana Crabtree, program coordinator for Texas A&M International University's Center of Fine and Performing Arts, said the events would be exciting and fresh.

"This dance troupe offers a glimpse at the cutting edge of dance. They incorporate hip-hop, house and break dancing and offer a truly entertaining evening to concert attendees, taking what were street forms of dance into the concert hall," said Crabtree, "It's a million miles away from being stuffy."

She explained the Laredo community would have several opportunities to meet the dancers and see their dance style.

"Area children will be invited to two outreach concerts, and the Company will be giving two master classes to area dance classes. In addition, people will be able to meet the dancers at a reception at the Laredo Center for the Arts. Finally, there will be a concert on Friday, February 11 at TAMIU," explained Crabtree.

The schedule of "Fly" events is as follows:

Wednesday, February 9 and Thursday, February 10- the Fly Dance Company will present "Fly to the Rescue," an introductory dance program with an anti-drug message to area school children at TAMIU and then at the Encinal Elementary School in Encinal, Texas.

Thursday, February 10, 6-8 p.m. - "Meet the Dancers" reception at Laredo Center for the Arts Gallery, 500 San Agustin Avenue. This event is free and open to the public.

Friday, February 11, 8 p.m. - "Fly in Concert" at TAMIU in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall. This event is open to the public and tickets are $10.

Crabtree said the group's three-day stay in the area was a collaborative event.

"TAMIU, along with the Laredo Center for the Arts and Hecho en Encinal worked to bring this amazing group to Laredo. We had generous help from the Texas Commission of the Arts and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust," explained Crabtree.
