An upcoming lecture will offer individuals insight into conducting and aiding research by deciphering historical handwriting styles.

Texas A&M International University assistant professor of History Dr. Aaron Olivas will offer a lecture titled, “Paleography 101: Reading and Understanding Spanish-Language Historical Documents,” on Thursday, Jan. 31 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library, located at 1120 Calton Road.

The presentation is free and open to the community.

Sponsored through the Villa San Agustin De Laredo Genealogy Society, the lecture will offer information on reading and conducting research based on 17th-19th Century Spanish-language documents from México and the borderlands. The practice of learning to interpret historical, handwritten documents, otherwise known as paleography, assists individuals in deciphering the writing customs and notarial abbreviations.
