New and experienced teachers can learn how to effectively teach Advanced Placement (AP) classes in their classrooms by attending an intensive summer institute at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) July 30-Aug. 2.

Registration is underway for the 2019 Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI), which will be offered through the TAMIU Office of Continuing Education.

A total of nine AP courses and one Pre-AP course in Math will be offered, said Susan Foster, director of Continuing Education. AP courses include English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, Calculus BC, U.S. History, Art and Design, World History Modern, Spanish Literature and Culture, Biology, and Government and Politics.

“The AP Summer Institute offers the most intensive, professional development available for AP educators as well as all educators interested in learning new and innovative methods,” Foster said, “Summer Institute attendees engage in 30 or more hours of content-rich training designed to strengthen how they teach their AP courses as well as how to integrate into Advanced Placement courses.”

College Board-endorsed consultants guide attendees through resources such as course outlines, content-specific handouts, student samples, scoring guidelines, and commentary from the most recent AP exams. To register, applicants must be certified teachers.

“AP Summer Institutes are helpful for both new and experienced teachers and may meet your state requirements for professional development,” Foster said, “AP Summer Institutes must be endorsed by the College Board. This endorsement confirms that the institution has conformed with all College Board guidelines for professional development.”

TAMIU’s Office of Continuing Education has been bringing the AP Summer Institute to TAMIU since 2002, Foster said.

“Each year, we have managed to increase participation and provide the most current AP course subjects,” she said, “This is a great networking conference for teachers. Each teacher is supplied with the tools they need to participate in their respective course.”

Foster continued, “We encourage all teachers, whether they teach Pre-AP or AP courses to attend in order to learn new strategies and share best practices. With instructional activities to build students’ understanding and targeted feedback to move the whole class forward, the Summer AP Institute will help to make the most of instructional time and empower students.”
