A creative fiction reading event hosted by students in Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU’s)  Creative Writing minor and the reference department of the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library will be held Friday, March 22 from 3 -5 p.m.at the Library, 1120 E. Calton Road.

Dubbed “An Afternoon of Stories/ Una Tarde de Cuentos,” the event will offer readings in both English and Spanish.  It is free of charge and open to all and will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on the Library’s first floor.

Student readers will include Adriana Ruiz, Melissa Bustamante, Itzamara Flores, Carmen García, Marina Peña, Michael Brewster, and Ricardo Cueva.

TAMIU’s minor in Creative Writing offers a variety of writing courses that may be taken in English or Spanish and is one of the few programs in the United States to offer Creative Writing in both languages.  All courses provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills as creative writers in small class settings, preparing them for the publishing world and entry into a career, graduate school, or professional school. In order to fulfill elective requirements, upper-level courses of this minor can be also taken by non-minors.

The Library’s Reference Department hosts programs for adults such as computer classes, job hunting classes, author talks, book groups, and much more to welcome the community to the Library and its services.

By hosting the March 22 event, the Library hopes to expand  its programming of interest to the community as it has with programs about health and wellness, including Yoga and Zumba classes.
