TAMIU Spring Dance Concert Scheduled April 12-13

TAMIU Spring Dance Concert

Witness the talents of Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) dance students during the upcoming Spring Dance Concert Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.

The concert highlights student performances in several dance genres, including ballet folklórico, flamenco, jazz and modern dance. Dances are choreographed to music by artists like Billie Eilish, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Luis Miguel and Cirque du Soleil, among others.

Additionally, a collaborative, improvisation-based piece between dance students and TAMIU’s Percussion Ensemble also is slated.

Admission is $5 minimum donation per person. University students enter free with an ID. Children 10 years and younger are admitted free.

The concert includes a student-choreographed dance, made possible through the Dance Performance Workshop, a student-led organization that offers students opportunities for performance and choreography.

Several dances also will feature Ballet Folklórico students who competed at the National Folklórico Competition in San Antonio. The group has been invited to perform at the Tercer Festival Nacional de Folklor in Monterrey, México this summer.

Choreography for the dance concert includes dance pieces by fine and performing arts faculty members Jee Eun Ahn, assistant professor of Dance; Kerry Kim, visiting assistant professor of Dance; Ericka García Haynes, adjunct faculty of Dance, and Nayeli Lopez, adjunct faculty of Dance.

Featured dance titles in the program include “Jalisco: Fiesta del Mariachi,” “Chiapas: Las Chiapanecas,” “Yucatán – Mujeres Que Se Pintan y Almudes,” “Intrepid Waters,” among others.

TAMIU currently offers a minor in Dance. Students can take courses in several genres and are also required to enroll in courses in improvisation, dance history, concert choreography and music for dancers.
