The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo, TAMIU Offer New Exercise Program Saturday

The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo has teamed up with members of Texas A&M International University’s College of Education to provide a new exercise program called U Work Out Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. at The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo.

U Work Outwill begin on the inaugural of The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace , Saturday, April 6, 2019which is a celebration of the power of sport to drive social change and community development.

This partnership between TAMIU’s College of Education and The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo is part of an initiative called BEATS, an acronym for Business, Education, Activity, Theater, and Science. The Activity segment is an exercise program designed for participants to use common areas of The Outlet Shoppes.

“This is not just a walking program, according to Dan Davilla, General Manager of The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo,  “U Work Outoffers incentives for reaching goals and ongoing fun programs for people of all ages and physical abilities.” 

The April 6 kick-off  at 10:00 a.m. near Book Warehouse, will include a warm-up with Under Armour Olympic Athlete Lindsey Torgersen,  Zumba with the City of Laredo Public Health, High School mascots, College of Education Physical Education and Coaching  Students, and Egger-cise with the Easter Bunny. Every child participating in Egger-cise will receive an egg with a prize.  Prizes include 30 bicycles, jump ropes and more.  

People of all ages are invited to enjoy walking in a safe, fun outdoor environment. Other beneficial health activities at The Outlet Shoppes include walking the stairs, playing ping pong, free health coaching and more. 

 “This is an ongoing partnership with TAMIU and the College of Education,” said Dan Davilla, General Manager of The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo, “Our mission with TAMIU is to promote the continuous educational growth on both sides of the border to provide for betterment in physical activity, numeracy, and literacy.  The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo is situated in a perfect location to offer this community service to both sides of the border.”

College of Education Dean Dr. James O’Meara concurred, noting the importance of physical activity to student achievement.

“There is a growing interest in Texas about the role of physical activity in improving academic achievement levels and attendance levels at the school level.  Our Kinesiology students are  leading ‘U Work Out’ sessions because we believe being active is a great way to increase success at school. The U Work Out sessions are part of our ‘We Teach Texas’ initiative of The Texas A&M University System , which affirms the central role of teachers in student success,” Dr. O’Meara explained.
