TAMIU CSDO Program Touts Graduate Studies Acceptance Rate
Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDO) students are living up to the challenge to ‘Go Beyond’ by pursuing graduate studies at several universities across the country.
Six CSDO students applied and obtained admission to various graduate school programs, including two students continuing their studies in Speech Pathology -- this equates to a 100 percent acceptance rate for graduate school for students in the CSDO and Audiology program, noted Dr. Melissa García, TAMIU clinical associate professor and CSDO clinic director.
Students accepted into the graduate school programs were Sophia De Los Santos, Emily Estrada, Dixie García, Amber Palos, Santiago Pérez and Yared Rodríguez. Students were accepted at Lamar University, Texas A&M University – Kingsville, Texas Tech University, and Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.
The student accomplishments reflect the goal and mission of TAMIU’s CSDO program to prepare students for Master-level CSDO programs and clinical doctorate programs in audiology, explained Dr. García.
She reiterated, “Students who did not apply for such programs seek a Master’s degree in education here at TAMIU and others are seeking speech-language pathology assistant jobs in Laredo, Austin, Houston, and Dallas.”
García explained that approximately 70 percent of CSDO students pursue careers in the field, while the remaining students seek careers in education, business, and counseling.
This past semester, CSDO students participated in several study abroad opportunities in Asia, Belize, and Costa Rica, and took part in the Lamar Bruni Vergara Academic Conference. They also participated in national and state conventions for speech-language pathology and audiology.
The University’s CSDO program offers students a pre-professional education in a field that is a culturally and linguistically diverse environment. The course of study emphasizes the importance of oral and written communication, scientific research, critical thinking, and ethical principles.
Students who go through the TAMIU program have opportunities for clinical observation and practicum of therapy for individuals across the lifespans that have communication delays or disorders through the CSDO Clinic.
Established in 2007, the CSDO Clinic provides services to children and adults with speech-language disorders. Services include assessment and intervention of speech, language, voice and fluency disorders in children and adults. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. The CSCO program is housed in the University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
